Coppice Making

Coppicing is the cutting of a tree on a cyclic basis. The tree is cut low and then a multitude of rods are allowed to grow up to be harvested at a fixed point in the future. This is repated again and again.

In the case of hazel coppice the life a tree can be extented from 150 years up to 850 years. Willow, hazel, ash, oak and swet chestnut have been coppiced for hundreds of years in the UK and this still continues today. It is a sustainable way of producing wood and has many environmental benefits in terms of flora and fauna. Tara Yurts carries out contract coppicing on various estates and woodland. The wood gathered feeds the hedgelaying, hurdlemaking, willowwork and Yurt production.
