Hedgelaying

Hedgelaying is the traditional way of managing a hedge in order to provide a stock-proof barrier. Upright stems are pleached or cut through just enough to lay them horizontally. The stem will continue to grow throwing out regrowth from the base cut and all along the layered stem in some shoots. This produces a very thick hedge creating an effective stock fence. It also provides habitat for a large range of small mammals, birds, reptiles and insect life.

Each county has its own style of hedglaying which depends on the topography and the livestock being farmed. In this area Breconshire and Radnorshire styles have prevailed helping to create what is now known as 'borders' style. We lay in the region of 1-2 thousand yards a season (from October to March. Prices start at £4 a yard but can be up to twice as much as that as each job is priced individually. If we are supplying stakes and heathers (binders) this pushes the price up as does the state of the headge, access and the presence of old wire or other obstacles etc. We are happy to come and look and will quote for free within a 15-25 mile radius.
